F1 News: Red Bull Reserve Liam Lawson Offers Future Update After Formula 1 Debut

Liam Lawson is waiting for his Formula 1 seat.

Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson, who debuted in Formula 1 last season, has offered an update on his F1 future as he waits for a full-time racing opportunity, not from any other team but only from Red Bull.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson updates on his Formula 1 future, expressing his desire for a full-time racing opportunity with Red Bull exclusively.
  • Last season, Lawson showcased his talent as a reserve driver for Red Bull's junior team VCARB, standing in for Daniel Ricciardo for five Grands Prix during Ricciardo's recovery from surgery.
  • Lawson's impressive performance alongside Yuki Tsunoda has bolstered his prospects of securing a full-time seat in the future, preferably with Red Bull or its junior team. He remains patient, awaiting the right opportunity, as indicated by Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko's suggestion that Lawson could secure a seat by 2025 at the latest.

Last year, Lawson demonstrated his prowess when he stepped in as a reserve driver for Red Bull junior team VCARB (then AlphaTauri), filling in for Daniel Ricciardo for five Grands Prix. Ricciardo was recovering from surgery following an incident during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.

Racing alongside Yuki Tsunoda, Lawson performed in a way that impressed everyone across the grid, thus enhancing his chances of securing a full-time seat in the future. However, since his temporary F1 adventure, the New Zealander is keen on racing full-time with Red Bull or maybe even its junior team.

Hence, Lawson has opted to forego other potential opportunities, opting instead to wait for the ideal chance. His optimism was reignited recently following Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko's statement indicating that Lawson would likely secure a seat by 2025, at the least.

Lawson revealed his plan to Speedcafe, suggesting that there is no fixed timeline on his table and that he still feels like a rookie despite finishing five GPs last year. He stated:

“Honestly, there’s no set timeline for my future.

“There’s nothing set in stone, obviously, with my future.

“Basically, for me, it’s about staying ready and hopefully we have some opportunity coming.

“I still feel like a rookie. It’ll basically be mostly simulator work and then going to all the races with the team as a reserve.”

Given that the contracts of Ricciardo, Tsunoda, and Red Bull driver Sergio Perez are set to expire after the 2024 season, Lawson stands a strong chance of securing one of the seats.
