F1 Rumour: New York City Targeted As Fourth US Formula One Race

New York could be the next Formula 1 destination in the USA.

Formula 1 non-executive chairman Chase Casey had revealed that Liberty Media was looking to bring F1 into New York City after ticking two main venues off the list, which includes Miami and Las Vegas

After the takeover of F1 in 2017 by Liberty Media, Casey was chairman and CEO of the new organizational framework. While the Austin GP had made its way into the sport's calendar in 2011, the new boss disclosed his wish to add three American venues to the F1 calendar- Miami, Las Vegas, and New York.

With the first two being included already, New York is next on the list to deal with. Speaking to Sky Sport's Martin Brundle during a pre-race grid walk in Las Vegas, he mentioned that New York was among the locations Liberty Media was considering for expansion. He said:

“This is what it should be all about.

“We said early on, Vegas, Miami and New York, they’re the next cities we should be in, and Vegas delivered.”

Las Vegas - Red Bull

However, considering the challenges residents had to face during the construction of the Las Vegas GP pit building, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Formula 1 group CEO Stefano Domenicali have differing opinions about the location of the New York City GP.

Domenicali prefers the 843-acre Central Park that links the city's Upper West Side and Upper East Side neighborhoods. The green wonder is a primary attraction in the city. While hosting a Grand Prix in the park could avoid the headache of road closures, it would also impact the location's tourism potential.

The Mayor of the city has an alternative option to offer the sport- Randalls and Wards Islands. Comprising interconnected islands, the area is predominantly made up of sports fields and parks. It is also an important transport hub of the area.

However, despite offering striking skyline views, it doesn't align with the city-center concept that Domenicali has in mind, which is a potential drawback for any race held in that location.

Maybe, an agreement on the location would be reached between the two parties sometime shortly. It could also be a compromise of some sort, but one thing is certain, they're serious about a Grand Prix in New York City.
