F1 Rumour: Pirelli Under Threat Of Losing Formula One Contract With Potential Iconic Return

Pirelli, the current Formula 1 tyre supplier, might face competition as Bridgestone is rumoured to have bid for the F1 tyre supply contract starting from 2025.

In an unexpected turn of events, Bridgestone, a renowned Japanese tyre manufacturer, is rumoured to have thrown its hat in the ring for the coveted Formula 1 tyre supply contract. This suggests that Pirelli, the current supplier, could face stiff competition in the coming year.

Earlier in 2023, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) initiated a tender process for the official F1 tyre supply contract for the period of 2025 to 2027, with an extension option till 2028. The deadline for application submissions was set for May 15, and the approved bidders will be declared on June 16.

Pirelli has been the sole tyre supplier for F1 since 2020, after winning a competitive tender process against South Korean company Hankook. The Italian tyre manufacturer received a one-year extension until the end of 2024 due to the new technical regulations delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the deadline for the 2025-2027 contract has passed, it's believed that Pirelli isn't the only one bidding for this prestigious tyre contract. Industry insiders have hinted at Bridgestone's potential involvement in the tender.

Bridgestone's F1 history spans from 1997 to 2010, and they were the exclusive supplier from 2007 to 2010 after Michelin withdrew from the championship in 2006. Even though Bridgestone exited F1, the company has maintained its presence in prominent Japanese racing categories and other international series. Their Firestone brand is currently the exclusive supplier for IndyCar.

In a conversation with Autosport, Eiichi Suzuki, Bridgestone's manager of motorsports planning, acknowledged that the company was assessing potential engagements in various racing series, including F1.

"We are always thinking about what and how we can best supply our motorsports activities in global categories, including F1.

"Of course, we are conducting research on such matters."

Despite these indications, Bridgestone has neither confirmed nor denied if it has officially applied for the F1 tyre supply contract. A company spokesperson maintained:

"Bridgestone has a heritage of over 60 years in motorsports and we will continue to pursue sustainable global motorsports activities. However, we refrain from commenting on any particular categories."
