Memphis Showboats Closer to Settling on Tight Ends After Releasing Former UCLA Starter

The Memphis Showboats waived Michael Ezeike on Monday as the tight end room is down to four players competing for roster spots.

The tight end room for the Memphis Showboats got a bit smaller in training camp after releasing Michael Ezeike on Monday.

Memphis originally selected Ezeike with the 35th overall pick in the 2023 USFL Draft. He would not join the team as he would elect to play in the NFL. Ultimately, Ezeike signed with the Showboats in October.

After the 2023 NFL Draft, Ezeike signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. He made it through until the end of training camp before being waived at the end of August.

Ezeike is no stranger to the Los Angeles area as he played for the UCLA Bruins from 2018-22. In 48 games, he caught 35 passes for 407 yards and seven touchdowns. The best season at UCLA was his senior year in 2022 where he grabbed 20 passes for 226 yards and four scores.

Coming out of high school, Ezeike was one of the top tight ends in the country as a four-star prospect. He was highly regarded as one of the top 40 prospects in the state of California by multiple media outlets.

The move drops the number of tight ends on the Memphis roster to four with Sage Surratt, Wes Saxton Jr., Jay Jay Wilson and recently signed Dominique Dafney. Surratt is the favorite to win the job after being one of the top pass catchers in the USFL last year.

Memphis opens the season on the road against the Houston Roughnecks on March 31.
