Memphis Showboats Defensive Back Troy Warner Retires

Memphis Showboats defensive back Troy Warner has retired from football after three professional seasons in the NFL and USFL.

In a surprising turn of events, the Memphis Showboats will not have one of their best defensive backs on the team for the 2024 UFL season. Troy Warner took to Instagram on Monday to share that he is retiring from football after two NFL seasons and one USFL season.

“Started as a young kid with a dream. A dream that one day I’d be able to put on an NFL uniform and play alongside some of the greats, and I did just that. I’m forever grateful for what this game has taught me, the experiences I gained while playing and for all those that had a hand in my career. It’s time I move from the game and enter this next chapter of life. As one door closes another one opens and I’m excited for the future.”

Warner had a strong year in his first and only season in the USFL, racking up 71 tackles and one interception for the Showboats. He played in the NFL in 2021 with the Los Angeles Rams and in 2022 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His brother is San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner.

For five seasons, Warner played at BYU, starting in 35 of the 47 games he appeared in and finishing his career with 121 tackles and two interceptions.

Memphis was looking at the 25-year-old safety to be one of the team’s starters entering the 2024 season. The Showboats may instead turn to free agency to find someone to either replace him or add depth to the secondary.

UFL training camps begin on Friday with the Showboats opening their season on March 31 on the road against the Houston Roughnecks.
