Ernesto ‘Tito’ Mercado Puts Undefeated Streak On The Line

“I’m coming to put this guy out in spectacular fashion”

Ernesto “Tito” Mercado Jr. is ready to introduce himself to the boxing world.

The undefeated 22-year-old from Pomona, California makes his DAZN debut later tonight, taking on seasoned veteran Deiner Berrio in a fight for the WBA Continental North America Gold super lightweight championship. The bout headlines Red Owl Boxing’s Boxfest VIII, and Mercado wants to use the added exposure to showcase why he is so elite.

“This is my first headline show as the main event, and that means a lot to me,” said Mercado (14-0, 13 KO’s), who defeated Cristian Bielma by knockout in February. “I’ve been excited throughout this whole training camp. I can’t wait for it to start.”

Mercado’s trainer is his father, Ernesto Sr. They opted not to sign with one of the more recognizable promoters, instead forging their own path in the sport. Their way has been extremely successful, and a victory against Berrio would elevate Mercado’s stature even further, giving him a regional title to defend.

“My father and I, we’re a great team,” said Mercado. “He knows how to push me and break past my limits. I have the utmost trust in him, and I know whatever we’re going to do, we’re going to succeed.”

Mercado now faces a new test at 140 pounds against Berrio (22-4-1), a veteran of the craft–but one who has dropped his last three fights. Berrio, 33, will look to use experience to his benefit, especially as he can restore his name value by defeating Mercado, a 2020 U.S. Olympic runner-up and a top prospect in the sport.

“I want that target on my back,” said Mercado. “That’s the only way I’ll get bigger and bigger fights.”

The elite fighters in boxing’s junior welterweight division are Devin Haney (31-0), Teofimo Lopez (20-1), and Subriel Matias (20-1). Mercado believes he belongs on that list of top 140-pound fighters, and his next step toward climbing that mountain is a win against Berrio.

“I’m not coming in just to do enough to win,” said Mercado. “I’m coming to put this guy out in spectacular fashion.”
