Angels Labeled as Fit for 2-Time All-Star Catcher by MLB.com

Could the Halos sign this former All-Star as collateral?

The Los Angeles Angels haven't had the best of offseasons. It's been rather sluggish outside of signing some arms out of the pen. Other than that, it's been slow.

The Angels still need to add a starting pitcher and some corner infielders. There is no sure thing they will sign those positions of need as spring training approaches.

However, there are still plenty of free agents on the market who the Halos could use. According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, one of them is two-time All-Star catcher Gary Sanchez.

C Gary Sánchez Age: 31

"Sánchez failed to catch on with either the Giants or Mets early in 2023, but the one-time phenom was rejuvenated after landing with the Padres in late May. He posted a .792 OPS with 19 home runs in 260 plate appearances, showing the power he displayed with the Yankees early in his career. Sánchez’s biggest impact may have come behind the plate, where he emerged as the personal catcher for Blake Snell, who posted a 1.29 ERA in their 18 games together. Perhaps Sánchez is waiting for Snell to sign, hoping for a reunion with his batterymate. Potential fits: Angels, Red Sox"

Sanchez is coming off a surprisingly productive 2023 season with the San Diego Padres. He slashed .218/.393/.500 with a .792 OPS. He also hit 19 home runs and 46 RBIs in 72 games.

However, the Angels already have a young catcher in Logan O'Hoppe. Sanchez could play a backup role with the Halos. At the ripe age of 31, Sanchez can still slug with the best of them and be some pop off the bench on some nights for the Halos.

If things pan out, he could be the team's occasional designated hitter the way he hit the ball last season.

The former Silver Slugger is still out there with the season starting soon. Should the Angels pursue him for some power and depth?
