Even after the news that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani would be shut down as a pitcher for the rest of the season, the Angels may be planning to stick with a six-man rotation.

It remains to be seen if they stay with this plan, especially after the news that they would be placing all of the players that they acquired at the trade deadline on waivers this week. Lucas Giolito was a part of the rotation, but he is likely to be picked up by a team through a claim.

Prior to the news regarding placing the players on waivers, manager Phil Nevin spoke about how the team could move forward with a six-man rotation.

“Yeah, that’s a possibility,” Manager Phil Nevin said. “Right now we have six guys we want to see start, too.”

With Ohtani out, Giolito on waivers and starter Chase Silseth placed on the injured list after taking a scary shot to the head the other day, there is a bit of uncertainty here for the Angels.

The team still has plenty of players to fill out their rotation, but it could go down to five. They will need to navigate how to play this down the stretch of the season. Starter Patrick Sandoval is a fan of pitching on four days of rest and would be open to it for the rest of the year.

“I liked it a lot better,” Sandoval said. “I feel like my body recovered pretty well. It feels weird to say but maybe more time makes me feel a little too good in between, so I throw a little bit more and then by the start day I’m not as fresh.”

The Halos aren’t in a position to make the playoffs barring a miraculous turn of events, so they can just see what they have in the guys on the roster. Especially when rosters expand here soon, the team could allow some younger players to get their chance at the big-league level.
