Angels Owner Arte Moreno Doesn't Want to Spend Money Just For Show

Why the Angels haven't spent a lot this offseason.

After a low-spending offseason, Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno defended the Angels' free agency decisions, especially when it came to their lack of spending.

The Angels have not made many changes to their starting rotation and instead opted to focus on adding in relief pitchers, such as Robert Stephenson. Stephenson was one of the Angels' bigger signings, agreeing to a three-year, $33 million deal.

Moreno explained that the Angels are not trying to spend a ton of money unless it will ensure they will become winners.

"I’m not going to spend money just to show that we’re going to spend money unless it’s going to substantially change the team," Moreno said.

For a team that went 73-89 in 2023 and has not made the playoffs since 2014, the lack of big moves has frustrated some fans who have wanted to see improvement from their team.

On the contrary, big money doesn't guarantee success or championships. Moreno has already explained that the Angels let Shohei Ohtani walk because they could not match the $700 million contract he received in free agency from the Los Angeles Angels.

Even when the Angels had Ohtani and star Mike Trout together, they were unable to make the playoffs. Instead, the Angels will look to begin improving under new manager Ron Washington, who is now a second-time manager after leading the Texas Rangers for seven years.

This approach will require the Angels to rebuild their culture and teaching by building through their farm and depth over those big signings that Moreno has avoided.
