The Athletic Reporter Provides Latest Update On Angels' Free Agency Plans

Where do the Angels go from here?

The Los Angeles Angels are in a very strange spot at the moment. They aren't currently viewed as a top contender, but they also could be a surprise team next season.

Even with two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani bolting for Los Angeles, the Angels still have a decent roster. It's more or less one of hope, but things could be a lot worse.

The front office has been trying to upgrade all across the board, with starting pitching rising to the forefront. The Halos have solid arms, but they also understand they are lacking a true ace-level starter.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal provided the latest update on the Halos' free agency plans while on the Foul Territory show. He once again aligned them with going after help for the rotation.

“They are linked and will be linked to starting pitchers. I do expect them to spend. I do expect them to be relatively aggressive.”

The team has been linked with both Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, but no deal has come to fruition yet. Either player would give them the front-line guy general manager Perry Minasian has been looking for, but it could be a complicated situation.

Historically, owner Arte Moreno has been hesitant to hand out large contracts to pitchers. But this offseason could be a unique case, especially after the departure of Ohtani.

The Angels want to remain competitive, and the goal is to break their long postseason drought. The only way for that to happen is for them to spend money on a top starter, or make a trade for one.

They don't have many great trade assets, so free agency seems to be the route for them to follow. This offseason is a crucial one for the Halos. Misallocating their resources in free agency would be a costly long-term mistake.
