Houston Astros Reportedly Sign Right-Handed Pitcher to Deal
The Houston Astros are making a few minor moves ahead of the MLB Winter Meetings set to take place in Nashville at the beginning of next week.
The Astros reportedly signed right-handed pitcher Kervin Castro to a minor league deal according to Evan Woodberry of MLive.
Castro is an interesting case. He is currently recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, so he will not pitch in MLB Spring Training. However, he is just 24 years old and was in Big League camp for the Detroit Tigers last year and pitched in the Major Leagues from 2021-22 with the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
In 25.2 innings pitched at the MLB level, Castros holds a 4.91 ERA with a 1.519 WHIP.
In 2023 he pitched at Triple-A Toledo and posted a respectable 2.30 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched.
Castro has a decent ceiling and by signing him to a minor league deal, Houston is taking no risk. If he can return successfully from a second Tommy John procedure, he could help payoff in the Astros bullpen.
