The Blue Jays have talked trade for the market's premier lefty bat.

Toronto is one of at least three teams who have had trade talks with the Texas Rangers for infielder/outfielder Joey Gallo, MLB Network's Jon Morosi said.

"The Blue Jays, Yankees, and Padres have had trade talks with the Rangers about RF/1B Joey Gallo," Morosi tweeted Tuesday.

Gallo has a swing-and-miss profile, with a high walk rate and immense power. While he has 796 career strikeouts, Gallo's fly-ball swing has caused him to ground into only nine double plays in his seven-year career. In 2021, Gallo leads the league in walks and has 24 homers with a .380 on-base percentage.

Gallo fills a clear need in Toronto's right-handed heavy lineup, as the Jays have just two active lefty hitters (Reese McGuire and Cavan Biggio). Though he'd have no clear defensive position, Gallo is an elite and versatile defender, playing games at CF, 3B, 1B, RF, and LF throughout his career.

With several bidding teams and multiple years of control, the price for a big lefty bat like Gallo would be high. Discussing potential Rangers/Blue Jays trade fits with Texas writer Chris Halicke, a package of Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jordan Groshans, and Orelvis Martinez for Gallo and Ian Kennedy was proposed.

The Padres have already acquired a versatile lefty bat at the deadline in Adam Frazier, but the Yankees could pose a threat for the Texas slugger ahead of the deadline. Like the Blue Jays, New York has a righty-heavy lineup, and Gallo's pull power would play into the short right-field porch at Yankee stadium.
