Mitch White's path to the Blue Jays rotation will be a bit delayed.

The Toronto righty suffered a shoulder impingement over the offseason, MLB.com's Keegan Matheson reports. White is beyond the injury now, but his build-up as a starting pitcher has been delayed.

White is expected to be at the center of one of Toronto's biggest position battles during 2023 Spring Training, fighting for the fifth spot in the Blue Jays' rotation alongside Yusei Kikuchi. Both White and Kikuchi have rotation upside but struggled during opportunities with the Jays last year.

White was acquired at the 2022 trade deadline from the Dodgers and recorded a 7.74 ERA in eight starts (10 appearances) down the stretch for Toronto. However, as a swingman with the Dodgers in 2021 and the first half of 2022, White had an ERA under 3.70 and struck out nearly a batter an inning.

White is out of minor-league options, meaning he'll have to start the season on the Opening Day roster even if he doesn't earn a rotation spot, or he'll hit waivers.
