Cardinals Could Look To Sign Two-Time All-Star Looking For Next Opportunity

St. Louis still could use a little more depth for the starting rotation

The St. Louis Cardinals still have some question marks despite the 2024 season being in full swing.

St. Louis has won three of its last four games but the club still is thin in the starting rotation. The Cardinals have been able to show flashes but the club's depth is being tested with ace Sonny Gray currently missing time due to a hamstring injury.

Gray should be back soon and even said that he hopes his next outing is with St. Louis rather than in the minor leagues because he feels good.

The Cardinals entered the 2024 campaign with rotation questions despite adding Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson in free agency. Many speculated that the club could add another hurler, but they decided against it.

While this is the case, another signing could make sense. There still are some options out there that could help St. Louis add more depth.

One player who still is out there and is looking for his next opportunity and is drawing interest from clubs is two-time All-Star Johnny Cueto, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Johnny Cueto hopes to keep pitching and is drawing interest," Heyman said.

Cueto is a 16-year veteran who could provide some much-needed cheap depth. At this point, he likely could be signed to a minor-league deal which would be a win-win for St. Louis. If the Cardinals could bring him in on a minor-league deal, he'd have the chance to show that he has something left in the tank.

If he were to impress, he could be called up to the big leagues. If he were to struggle, it wouldn't cost St. Louis much. If the Cardinals have any concerns about the rotation, a move for Cueto could make sense.
