Cardinals Executive Reportedly Takes Intriguing Stance On Club's Offseason Plans

St. Louis could get creative this offseason as it looks to build a new starting rotation

The St. Louis Cardinals have plenty of work to do this offseason and they certainly know it.

St. Louis had its worst season in years in 2023 and plans to make some changes so it won't happen again in 2024. The Cardinals have already stated that they are looking to add three starting pitchers and continue doubling down on the sentiment that they will be making changes.

Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III is the latest to discuss the club's offseason plans and says they will be aggressive, according to the St. Louis Business Journal's Nathan Rubbelke.

"The St. Louis Cardinals plan to be “aggressive” in returning to the club’s winning ways in 2024, with plans to increase payroll even as the club budgets for a decrease in revenue next season, President Bill DeWitt III said.

“We do believe when we’re looking toward 2024, we’re trying to compete,” DeWitt said as transcribed by Rubbelke. "While DeWitt said it’s too soon to know how much the Cardinals will increase payroll, he expects the Cardinals “will climb the rankings” among MLB teams for payroll size."

St. Louis' offseason aggression likely will mainly be seen in the form of a new starting rotation. The Cardinals will add at least three hurlers and have been linked to some big big-name players like Philadelphia Phillies star Aaron Nola and Minnesota Twins ace Sonny Gray. St. Louis also has been linked to Orix Buffaloes star Yoshinobu Yamamoto and former Cardinals lefty Jordan Montgomery. It's unclear what exactly the team will do, but it's clear they will be willing to spend this offseason.
