Cardinals Insider Makes Surprise Suggestion About Potential Reunion With Fireballer

Could a reunion be on the horizon with a former Cardinals fireballer?

What will the St. Louis Cardinals do this upcoming offseason?

St. Louis is in an interesting position. The 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline is upon us and the Cardinals are sellers. St. Louis already has traded away pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Jordan Hicks and there likely will be more moves shortly. Unlike some other sellers, though, the Cardinals realistically could turn things around as soon as next season.

The Cardinals are loaded with talent but inconsistent play, injuries, and a struggling starting rotation have hampered the club this season. If St. Louis could add to its rotation, it could be right back at the top of the National League Central standings in 2024. This upcoming offseason is going to be extremely important as the club now has to address the rotation in a serious manner. Plus, with these trade deadline moves, there will be a couple of holes to fill.

St. Louis will have to also fill its closer role after dealing Hicks away but St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Ben Frederickson suggested a reunion could be on the horizon with the fireballer.

"Would not be surprised if (the Cardinals) and Jordan Hicks reunite this offseason," Frederickson said.

Although the Cardinals traded Hicks away, it wouldn't be the most shocking thing to see him back in town next season. Hicks will be a free agent at the end of the season and already has had contract talks with the Cardinals. St. Louis reportedly was negotiating an extension with Hicks before his trade to the Toronto Blue Jays. Although a deal didn't get done, the fact that the two sides already have held negotiations on a long-term deal shows that both parties at least have some interest in a longer partnership. That may have changed after the trade, but maybe we could see Hicks back in a Cardinals jersey next season.
