Cardinals Reportedly Lose Outfielder For Season; Has He Played His Last Game For Club?
The St. Louis Cardinals reportedly will be without one of their young outfielders for the rest of the season.
Dylan Carlson hasn't appeared in a game for St. Louis since August 9th as he's dealt with an ankle injury and he reportedly won't return this season, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.
"Dylan Carlson has opted for season-ending arthroscopic ankle surgery after it didn’t approve after his return to baseball activities," Woo said. "Nolan Gorman has a Grade 2 hamstring strain. The Cardinals are hopeful it won’t end his season, but with 17 games remaining, that’s a tough ask."
Carlson had a roller coaster of a season, to say the least. His role with the club was in flux seemingly all season and it likely helped lead to struggles at the plate. Carlson appeared in just 76 games this season and slashed .219/.318/.333 with five home runs and 27 RBIs. The 24-year-old also found his name in trade rumors for much of the season and rumblings of a possible offseason deal already have started floating around.
At this point, it's unclear if Carlson will appear in another game with the Cardinals. St. Louis has a logjam in the outfield and likely will lighten it this upcoming offseason likely in a trade for a starting pitcher. Carlson struggled this season but still has some intriguing trade value as he's just 24 years old and already a four-year veteran. St. Louis easily could opt to hold on to Carlson and deal elsewhere --especially due to the injury -- but his future certainly is uncertain at this time.
