Here's How Cardinals Exciting Top Prospect Masyn Winn Fared In Impressive MLB Debut

St. Louis certainly has a bright future despite a down year

The St. Louis Cardinals have their shortstop for the future.

St. Louis has had a down year, to say the least, but Cardinals fans certainly had something to cheer about Friday night. The Cardinals lost against the New York Mets but what will be remembered from the contest is the Major League Baseball debut of Cardinals top prospect Masyn Winn.

The 21-year-old recently was called up to the big leagues for the first time and got the start at shortstop against the Mets. Winn finished the game 1-for-4 and flashed some impressive leather at shortstop. The young phenom collected his first big league hit in the fifth inning of the contest off of Mets pitcher Joey Lucchesi with an infield single toward third base. Winn's first big league hit led to some controversy as Mets slugger Pete Alonso tossed the ball into the stands, but the St. Louis shortstop eventually was able to track down the ball.

Winn was drafted in the second round of the 2020 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and now joins fellow youngster Jordan Walker on the big league club. Both Winn and Walker were drafted in 2020, which goes to show that the Cardinals have a bright future for a while if the pair can stay healthy. The young shortstop impressed with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds this season leading to his call-up. In 105 games, Winn slashed .288/.359/.474 to go along with 18 home runs, seven triples, and 61 RBIs.

Although the 2023 campaign will be a small sample size at the big league level for Winn, hopefully, he can get his footing before what's expected to be a full season in St. Louis in 2024.
