There are some exciting things happening around the Chicago Cubs' clubhouse as they continue to prove how good of a baseball team they are. After sweeping the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, they now sit one-and-a-half games back of the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers.

The sweep was punctuated by a dominant performance from their rookie pitcher, something that the Cubs have gotten used to since they called him up from Triple-A in late August.

Rookie sensation Jordan Wicks has exceeded all expectations that were placed on him as he was climbing the minor league pipeline. The left hander has now started three games in the MLB posting a record of 3-0 with a dazzling 2.16 ERA.

Wednesday was the longest outing of Wicks' career, going 6.2 innings before allowing two runs. Previously, he had been limited to five innings in his two prior starts despite holding opponents to only one earned run in each outing.

It's been a masterclass from the rookie who has shown a deep arsenal of power, location control and strikeout ability. He's been able to showcase each bits of his game in all three of his starts so far.

The arrival of the lefty came at the perfect time. There were major questions about Chicago's starting rotation beyond Cy Young contender Justin Steele. Early season ace Marcus Stroman is still on the IL and big offseason signing Jameson Taillon continues to struggle.

It's been the rookies Javier Assad and Wicks who have stepped up to support Steele and take pressure off the Cubs' offense who continues to produce at a high level.

If the rookie can continue producing at this high of a level, Chicago will be a major contender in the National League playoffs.
