Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno throws home after retrieving a wild pitch

Gabriel Moreno is Day-to-Day with a Right Thumb Contusion

The D-backs Gold Glove catcher was a late scratch from Tuesday night's lineup

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave health updates on Tuesday on several players during his media session, but he was only able to advise the details of the newest addition to the list an hour afterward.

Gold Glove catcher Gabriel Moreno suffered a right thumb contusion while trying to catch a wild pitch in the dirt from Kevin Ginkel that ultimately resulted in the tying runs scoring in the 9th inning. The D-backs went on to lose 3-2 in 11 innings.

Lovullo said that Moreno is day to day. He was replaced in the lineup by Tucker Barnhart who last caught on Sunday. The D-backs have a day game tomorrow so if Moreno cannot catch that game Barnhart would be forced to catch a day game after night, which teams typically avoid with catchers.

Moreno is off to a slow start at the plate this year, batting .244/.358/.356, .714 OPS, or 100 OPS+. He's yet to homer but does have three doubles and a triple, along with eight walks versus just four strikeouts in 53 plate appearances. Moreno has thrown out two of four base stealers, as teams have opted to just stop running on him.

Barnhart has been a solid backup. In five starts there has not been a single wild pitch or passed ball, and nobody has attempted to steal on him. He's batting .250 on 3-12 hitting with two walks in 15 plate appearances.

Paul Sewald (Oblique strain) threw his second bullpen, getting in 25 pitches. Lovullo still could not say what next steps would be. Sewald could throw another bullpen, or live batting practice, prior to going out on a rehab assignment.

The manager admitted that they need to be cognizant of the nature of these types of injuries and resist the temptationtoo to push the player to come back to soon. Prior examples were discussed such as Ketel Marte's hamstrings in 2021, Christian Walker's multiple oblique strain injuries that same year, or even back to Zack Greinke's oblique injury during the 2016 season.

Jordan Montgomery threw a 44 pitch bullpen and is primed to make his season debut this weekend in San Francisco. The presumption is it will be Friday, the 19th, but the team has yet to confirm that.

Alek Thomas (Hamstring) has begun his running progression this week. The centerfielder went on the injured list shortly after being pulled from a game on March 31st. Assuming he has no setbacks he is likely at least a week to 10 days out from returning.
