Diamondbacks Fall to Angels 4-1 in Spring Training

A lackluster day on offense outside of Ketel Marte, and some sloppy play late defined an uninspiring day

The Diamondbacks lost to the Angels 4-1 on Saturday in Tempe Diablo Stadium.  The loss dropped their Cactus League record to 5-4 . They've scored 45 runs and allowed 43.

Logan Allen got the start and pitched two scoreless innings.  He was followed by Paul Sewald, Scott McGough, and Kyle Backhus, who each put up zeroes of their own in one inning of work. The string of donuts ended when Aaron Hicks took Kyle Nelson deep in the 6th inning.

The D-backs were leading 1-0 up to that point thanks to Albert Almora's sacrifice fly that drove in Tucker Barnhart. Ketel Marte  led of the game in the first inning with a double, but got picked off second base.  Marte had another double in the 6th inning and is batting a ridiculous .615 in spring so far, going  8-for 13.

The D-backs were not able to push across anymore runs in this game, and the Angels scored one in the 7th and two more in the 8th to seal the victory.  Andrew Saalfrank gave up a double and then a sharp line drive off the glove of Lawlar was ruled an error, allowing an unearned run to score.  Peter Strzelecki pitched the 8th and gave up four hits leading to his two runs allowed.

Lovullo said for many of these guys it's already their second outing and he expects them to exhibit better command in the coming games. "The evaluation process will take a different tone over the next several days. Everybody has to be beyond just getting dirt on their spikes."

The D-backs are back at Salt River Fields Sunday, hosting the Milwaukee Brewers. Bryce Jarvis will get the start. Game time is 1:10 P.M.
