D-backs Claim RHP Chris Rodriguez Off Waivers From Angels

Arizona adds a once promising right-handed pitcher from the Angels system who's struggled with recent injuries.

Even though they're playing in the World Series, the Diamondbacks are still making moves with their 40-man roster. According to Robert Murray of Fansided, Arizona has claimed Chris Rodriguez off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

Rodriguez, 25, was drafted by the Angels in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft.  Once a promising arm in the Angels system, ranked as the third in the organization by Baseball America, shoulder surgery has kept him off the field since the 2021 season. That year he made his major league debut and pitched to a 3.64 ERA in 15 games, two starts. When healthy, he has a live arm that averages just under 96 MPH and a full mix of pitches.

With that arsenal of pitches but a troubling injury history with that right shoulder, he could be a possible bullpen conversion candidate next spring. Arizona's bullpen had a tough 2023 season, but came together at the right time as they've keyed a magical run to the World Series. While not eligible to pitch in the postseason, Rodriguez gives the D-backs another camp arm to compete for a potential bullpen spot. Even if he doesn't make the 2024 Opening Day roster, there are two options left on his contract. Should he stick for Arizona, he is controllable through the 2027 season.
