Hunter Greene Not Starting on Opening Day May Exactly What He Needs to Take Next Step

Greene not being named Opening Day starter shows he is not Reds ace... yet.

Frankie Montas will start for the Reds on Opening Day.

It's a surprising move. What does this mean for Hunter Greene? This appears to be a challenge.

Reds manager David Bell said his message to Greene was simple: "keep going.”

Greene hasn't reached reached his full potential. That could be the motivation behind naming Montas the Opening Day starter.

Greene started on Opening Day last year against Pittsburgh and struggled. He didn't get out of the fourth inning and the Reds lost. His entire 2023 season was full of ups and downs, leaving us with very similar questions about this year and how he'll take the next step.

Being named the Opening Day starter is a bit more ceremonial than it is hierarchical. With Greene being the first of the young core to receive a long-term contract, it seemed to be obvious that he’d be the one to take the mound on March 28. All of the quotes out of Goodyear, though, praised Montas' conditioning and how he's looked throughout spring training. This decision clearly celebrates the work that the veteran has put in this offseason after signing with the Reds in December.

Does the celebration of Montas also include a challenge to Greene? He isn't the default ace. Instead, the former No. 2 overall pick must earn that title.

Ever since he was drafted, Greene has dealt with high expectations. He has immense talent, but he hasn't established himself as an ace.

This may be the kick in the butt that he needs to take the next step.
