The Milwaukee Bucks have had a fairly successful offseason, as they retained All-Stars Brook Lopez and Khris Middleton, as well as rugged veteran forward Jae Crowder, to team up once again with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and two-way stud Jrue Holiday. Still, a quick look at the team’s roster shows that the Bucks do not have a legitimate backup point guard. When The Athletic’s Eric Nehm asked about this, Bucks general manager Jon Horst said he’s not worried about this discrepancy, saying the team has enough pieces to make it work.

At peace with the roster

Horst explained that while he understands that not having a backup point guard may have fans worried, the Bucks have enough secondary ballhandlers to get the job done.

“We’re at peace with where we’re at right now. We’ll see. You never know how it works out and we’ll have avenues to change if we need to change. But we have a lot of secondary ballhandlers,” Horst said.

In case Holiday needs a breather, the Bucks have veterans like the newly-acquired Malik Beasley, Grayson Allen, and even Giannis—who started his Bucks career as a point guard—to give the starting PG a rest.

Give the young guys a chance

Horst also talked about giving some of the young guys on the roster like Lindell Wigginton and Omari Moore a shot at the backup point guard role. Wigginton played a ton of minutes in the last two games of the regular season and even had a breakout game where he recorded 25 points and 11 assists.

“Even though there’s not, by position, a true, pure backup point guard on the 15-man roster, we have Lindell (Wigginton) and Omari (Moore) on our 2-ways right now and we feel great about those guys,” Horst commented.

“Lindell, in particular, has been there and done that for us, so he’s going to have an opportunity.”
