The Milwaukee Bucks may have a team primed for title contention next season. However, it has one glaring need on its roster—a legit backup point guard who’ll play behind All-Star Jrue Holiday. And while Bucks general manager Jon Horst has publicly stated he’s comfortable with the current roster, the team remains in the hunt for a player who can capably fill the said role.

According to a report by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Bucks are exploring the possibility of adding guard Edmond Sumner. A five-year pro, Sumner played solid basketball for the Nets last season, averaging 7.1 points on just under 14 minutes of playing time per game.

Drawing interest

Scotto reports that the 6-foot-4 guard from Xavier is drawing interest from several teams, such as the Toronto Raptors, the Miami Heat, and the Phoenix Suns. After suffering an Achilles injury during the 2021-2022 season, Sumner has worked his way back and played well in his limited minutes for the Nets.

Aside from an ability to get buckets—as evidenced by his back-to-back 29- and 23-point games back in February—Sumner has proven capable of quarterbacking the offense. His size and defensive ability also give him an edge over other reserve guards.

Who will get the last roster spot?

The Bucks have one roster spot left, and they may want to use that for a backup point guard like Sumner. However, Thanasis Antetokounmpo—the brother of Bucks superstar Giannis—remains unsigned, and many league observers believe that the team will use that spot to sign the reserve forward.

“Milwaukee lacks a true point guard behind Jrue Holiday, with one remaining roster spot open. With that said, many around the league believe Thanasis Antetokounmpo will ultimately claim that final spot,” Scotto wrote.
