While Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan has yet to finalize who’ll start at point guard, it appears that Coby White has the inside track on the vacancy. After showing significant improvements last season and carrying that momentum over to this season, longtime Bulls insider Sam Smith says the starting point guard spot may be White’s to lose.

The right fit

In a mailbag session on NBA.com Smith addressed numerous questions regarding White and the vacant point guard spot of the Bulls. Smith remarked that after a couple of preseason games, the former North Carolina Tar Heel might be better suited to start over Jevon Carter or Ayo Dosunmu.

“It’s just preseason, and just two games, you know, but it is looking like Coby to start and Ayo to follow,” Smith said.

“Coby looks like he may be the right fit to start. White has played with assurance and while not a gifted facilitator, Zach and DeMar are going to create for themselves. Coby can add some needed offense,” Smith added.

More confident

White started the preseason with a solid performance against the Milwaukee Bucks, tallying 14 points, six boards, six assists, and two steals. He followed that up with eight points and four assists versus the Denver Nuggets. On Sunday, he had 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting against the Nuggets.

These performances seem to be giving White more confidence in his ability.

“My sense is training camp suggested Coby is better with the ball and more confident with the regulars than Carter and Dosunmu, and because the team is prioritizing an offensive improvement, that he will help provide more firepower,” Smith surmised.
