Pistons claim big man Wood off waivers

The Detroit Pistons have claimed big man Christian Wood off waivers, according to Shams Charania of Stadium.

Wood, 23, was released by the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday.

By claiming him off waivers, the Pistons are responsible for his $1.7 million salary for next season, $822,679 of which will be guaranteed if Wood is on the roster opening night. His full salary will become fully guaranteed Jan. 10, when all contracts in the NBA become guaranteed.

In eight games (2 starts) with New Orleans last season, Wood was productive, averaging 16.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots in 23.6 minutes, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 75.6 percent from the free-throw line after being claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Bucks on March 20.

The former Nevada-Las Vegas standout went undrafted in 2015 and has spent time with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Charlotte Hornets in addition to the Pelicans and the Bucks.

The 6-foot-10, 214-pound Wood carries career averages of 5.3 points and 2.9 boards, shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 70.7 percent from the charity stripe.
