Mavs' Doncic becoming superstar in front of our eyes

Unto us a star is born -- and his name is Luka Doncic.

The Slovenian-born prodigy burst onto the scene as a budding star similar to the likes of European sensation Ricky Rubio when he turned pro at the ripe age of 16.

While his basketball exploits drew high praise from scouts all over, there was still cynicism as to whether his talents would translate to the NBA game at the highest level.

Listed at 6-foot-7, Doncic possesses unique skill for his size with the ability to handle the basketball, shoot, and pass with the dexterity suited for smaller players. He drew comparisons to LeBron James with his exceptional basketball IQ and the confidence to compete with grown men twice his age in the second-best league in the world.

However, with so much going for him, there were still doubts whether or not he was indeed the best prospect in his draft class. Due to this, both the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings passed on Doncic with the first two picks for DeAndre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III, respectfully.

But with the third pick, he made the earth sick as the Dallas Mavericks acquired Doncic via a trade with the Atlanta Hawks. And just like that, Doncic was ready to take the league by storm.

Right out the gate, Doncic showed he was born for this stage. After missing the entire NBA Summer League, Doncic dropped 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting (3-of-4 from 3) in his first preseason game. He finished the preseason averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while shooting 47.5% from the field (43.5% from 3).

For Luka, though, these numbers were not atypical. His talents along with his already pro experience proved he could put up above-average stats early into his career.

No, most expected this. What may not have been expected is everything else that encompasses this strong start.

Look no further than the 11-point explosion Doncic put on the other night against the Houston Rockets. Down by eight with less than three minutes to go, Doncic put together a late-game exhibition akin to the greats who preceded him. When everyone in the building, players and coaches included, knew who the ball was going to -- Doncic still delivered, and delivered in style.

Going against two superstars in their own right in James Harden and Chris Paul, Doncic showcased the maturity, confidence, and downright bravado reserved only for those who relish in those moments.

He wanted this. He was prepared for this -- and he delivered.

At 19-years-old, Doncic has much more room to grow and learn about the confines of the NBA. He's averaging 18.2 points per game on the year, and has the Mavericks sitting second in the Southwest Division with a 13-11 record.

But for right now, his star is growing, and it's only going to shine brighter.
