    Bulls' Carter Jr. to have surgery on core muscle injury

    Wendell Carter Jr. of the Chicago Bulls will undergo a surgical procedure to repair a core muscle injury, according to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune.

    The 20-year-old will miss the rest of summer-league play, though he is expected to return to play in time for training camp. The injury is not related to the thumb injury that ended Carter Jr.'s 2018-19 season.

    Carter Jr. averaged 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 blocked shots in 25.2 minutes in 44 games, shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 79.5 percent from the free-throw line.

    He was the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft out of Duke by the Bulls.

    Carter Jr.’s surgery will be performed Tuesday by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.
