Sources: Suns have no interest in Cavs' Hill

The Phoenix Suns, who are actively looking to acquire a starting-caliber point guard, have no interest in Cleveland Cavaliers guard George Hill, a league source told Amico Hoops on Tuesday. 

The Suns traded Brandon Knight to the Houston Rockets last week in a deal that brought Ryan Anderson to Phoenix. As a result, the Suns need a point guard in the worst way and have been active in attempting to trade for an established veteran.

John Gambadoro of ArizonaSports.com has reported the Suns have made inquiries on Damian Lillard, Kemba Walker and Terry Rozier.

Hill, 32, is due $19 million in 2018-19, but has just $1 million guaranteed in 2019-20. The Suns are not fascinated with the idea of paying Hill $19 million since they will owe Anderson over $20 million, sources said.

The Cavs acquired Hill at the 2018 February trade deadline from the Sacramento Kings. In the 24 regular season games he appeared in with Cleveland this past season, Hill averaged 9.4 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from three.

During the Cavs’ Eastern Conference postseason run, Hill posted 9.7 points per game and shot just 25.7 percent from beyond the arc. He missed three games due to a back ailment as well. In the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors, Hill’s production and numbers dipped. In the four-game sweep, Hill averaged a mere 7.5 points. His matchup, Stephen Curry, averaged 24.3 points.

The Cavs didn't have much luck trying to move Hill earlier this offseason, sources said. Cleveland drafted dynamic guard Collin Sexton with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 draft and doesn't want to bring him off the bench, which is why the organization was trying to find a new home for Hill.

Cavs general manager Koby Altman has said multiple times this summer the franchise is not in rebuild mode now that LeBron James is gone. Altman and head coach TyronnLue do see some positives in having Hill being a mentor to Sexton, but ultimately, both men would like to get Sexton as much playing time as possible and moving Hill is one way to accomplish that goal.
