All-Star city? Cavs begin arena renovations
The Cleveland Cavaliers have started construction on the renovation to Quicken Loans Arena, according to a report from Crain's Cleveland Business.
Per the report:
"A Cleveland Cavaliers spokesman on Thursday morning, Sept. 14, confirmed to Crain's that passersby will see fencing that has been erected to establish a perimeter for a staging area for cranes and for initial exterior foundation work that will transform the north side of the arena, along Huron Road and Ontario Street."
Construction was originally expected to begin in June -- but the Cavs backed out after citizens' groups opposed the city's financial contribution to the $140 million renovations.
The Cavs recommitted to the project earlier this month.
"The plan is for the Cavaliers to cover half the cost, with the other half coming from existing tax revenue streams that flow to the city of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and Destination Cleveland, the regional tourism bureau," Crain's wrote.
The Cavs are expected to meet the NBA's deadline to complete renovations, and therefore, Cleveland could be in line to host All-Star Weekend in 2020 or 2021.
