Spurs Draft: Acquiring Another First-Round Pick Would be Wise

San Antonio has the assets to pair Victor Wembanyama with another first-round prospect in its upcoming rookie class.

The San Antonio Spurs have already won the 2023 NBA Draft after landing the No. 1 overall pick and the opportunity to select a generational talent in Victor Wembanyama. He has the upside to be the face of the NBA at some point and is already the favorite to win Rookie of the Year.

With that in mind, San Antonio could really push to make a big move and leave draft night with even more young talent. Multiple reports have indicated that the Spurs have an interest in trading into the first round, potentially into the lottery, to take another quality talent alongside Wembanyama. San Antonio has the third pick in the second round (No. 33 overall) that could be used to move up and acquire a second first-round selection.

This would be a smart move by the Spurs, who now have one of the brightest futures in the league. Just last year, they took three players in the top 25 of the 2022 NBA Draft. They added Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley to the already young duo of Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell.

Add Wembanyama and another first rounder in June, and San Antonio would take a tremendous step forward in the rebuild.

The Spurs have the assets to trade into the lottery, but would also be smart to simply add a mid to late first rounder. They’re at a point in which positional need isn’t a concern, with the flexibility to add a guard, wing or even a forward to play alongside Wembanyama. With how deep this class is, this is the draft to take swings. Especially as this new-look team finds its identity around Wembanyama, it makes sense to bring in another potentially elite rookie.
