Miami Heat vs. San Antonio Spurs: Five Major Takeaways

The Miami Heat took down the San Antonio Spurs 118-113 on Sunday night

The Miami Heat (6-4) claimed their fifth consecutive win on Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs (3-7).

Here’s a look at the five biggest takeaways:

1. Victor Wembanyama’s defense is one of a kind.

The No. 1 pick holds a significant impact on the defensive end in a way no other player can because of his 7-foot-4 frame. On multiple occasions, the Heat were called for shot clock violations because of Wembanyama’s interior presence. He finished the night with one steal and one block, continuing his case for Defensive Player of the Year.

2. Duncan Robinson looks like his old self.

After averaging 6.4 points last season, Robinson appears to be in the best shape of his career. He scored 26 points along with five rebounds and four assists on 50 percent shooting. With guards Kyle Lowry and Tyler Herro sidelined, Robinson capitalized on the opportunity to play 38 minutes.

3. The Heat can't afford to have slow starts.

Starting off the game by shooting 4 of 20 is a recipe for disaster. However, the Heat came back against an inexperienced Spurs roster. In the postseason, teams such as the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics will take advantage of Miami’s mistakes.

4. The Spurs are on the path to becoming championship contenders in the near future.

San Antonio has a strong core, led by Wembanyama. Under coach Gregg Popovich, they are looking to compete for a championship in the near future. Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and Keldon Johnson are young pieces who complement Wembanyama. The trio combined for 50 points in the narrow defeat.

5. Dru Smith filled in well for Kyle Lowry.

In the absence of the veteran, Smith performed well, coming off the bench. He recorded 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists in Miami’s five-point victory. Smith’s contributions are significant because of the Heat’s unpredictable injuries.
