Report: Hornets Looking to Trade Lowry

ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski reports Hornets are "expected" to work on finding a trade partner for Kyle Lowry

With today's breaking news that the Hornets have traded Terry Rozier to the Miami Heat in exchange for Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round pick, a new question arises regarding how Lowry fits with the Hornets.

The Rozier trade signals that the Hornets are embracing the rebuild, viewing this season as a wash, making it challenging to see Lowry's role with the team. The veteran point guard, Lowry, is now 37 years old, averaging 8.2 ppg, and is due $29 million as he is in the final year of his contract.

ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski quickly reported after the trade was announced that the Hornets "have no immediate plans to work on a buyout with Lowry and are expected to see if they can work another trade for him before the February 8 deadline."

What the Hornets will be able to get in return for Lowry remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely that Lowry will be a part of the Hornets for very long. The challenge lies in finding a contending team willing and able to take on Lowry's current contract. It may require the Hornets to package Lowry with other assets as they continue their rebuilding efforts.

Wojnarowski also reported shortly after that the Hornets are going to continue to look to add "future assets" ahead of the deadline, implying more Hornets could be on the move.

If the Hornets are unable to find a trade partner for Lowry, he would be a prime buy-out candidate, allowing him to sign with a contender for the remainder of the season.
