Seth Curry on Playing for Hornets: 'You Always Think About It'

Could the Hornets make a play for the veteran guard?

Charlotte native Seth Curry is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason and there's a possibility he could make his return home to the Queen City.

During a recent interview with Sam Albuquerque of Greenville News, Curry discussed the possibility of signing with the Hornets this summer.

"You always think about it. Growing up a Hornets fan, watching my dad play, you always think about one of us wearing that No. 30 Hornets jersey in the modern era," Curry said. "But like I always say, you never know in this league."

The Hornets don't have a backup point guard under contract nor do they have a reliable No. 2 option at shooting guard. GM Mitch Kupchak will have some decisions to make in regard to the futures of Dennis Smith Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr., who were key pieces to the rotation alongside Svi Mykhailiuk and Theo Maledon who benefitted from the long list of injuries the team suffered throughout the season.

Curry has played under an average base salary of $8 million per year over the last four seasons, meaning he would be a more expensive option than Dennis Smith Jr., but probably slightly cheaper than Kelly Oubre. If there is actual mutual interest and Kupchak sees a fit, maybe signing Curry and bringing back Smith is the way to go. Curry would give Steve Clifford scoring off the bench while Smith would bring that defensive spark along with some offense here and there. A veteran backcourt duo of Curry/Smith Jr. off the bench is a heck of a lot better than anything the Hornets have rolled out there the past few seasons.
