Eastern Conference Rival has "Expressed Interest in Acquiring PJ Washington"

As Washington is a RFA any deal would have to be a Sign & Trade

Hornets fans haven't received an update about PJ Washington's restricted free agency for some time, but has that now changed? Cleveland Cavaliers beat reporter Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com recently wrote about Cleveland's interest in PJ Washington.

"Cleveland has expressed interest in acquiring Washington, and there’s a belief it is lurking, there haven’t been any extensive, detailed or meaningful trade discussions with Charlotte at this point."

Fedor went onto speculate about the potential trade package that Cleveland could offer Washington

If Washington would be willing to take less money -- a contract in the same range as Markkanen’s $15-million-per-year number in 2021 -- the salaries of Dean Wade and Rubio would theoretically work financially. Toss in some second-round picks as sweeteners and there’s an alternate trade framework. But would it satisfy Charlotte?

Analysis: Chris is a reliable and trusted NBA reporter, I've done some checking behind the scenes and I was told this report can be treated as reliable. While Cleveland have interest in Washington, the package suggested appears to make little sense for Charlotte. Firstly, the Wade + Rubio combination only works if Washington were to take $15 million per year in his contract. It's only speculation, but I believe Charlotte would be willing to re-sign Washington for $15 million per year, so why would they trade him at that price?

Secondly, the Wade + Rubio package plus 2nd round picks isn't enough in terms of value. Charlotte don't have a 2nd round pick in 2025, however they do have at least one 2nd round pick in 2024 and 2026, two in 2027 and 2028, they aren't in desperate need of more 2nds. A more realistic deal for the Hornets would revolve around Isaac Okoro, a defensive minded wing who would immediately become Charlotte's best perimeter defender.

As Fedor states, they haven't been any meaningful discussions between the teams yet but if there are negotiations might be difficult to find fair value for both sides.
