Jazz Could Target These 5 Vets in Free Agency

The Utah Jazz still have a few roster holes to fill.

Free agency began today, June 30, at 2 pm MDT. The Utah Jazz have had a busy week, first acquiring high-flying forward John Collins, and then receiving news that both Jordan Clarkson and Talen Horton-Tucker would be accepting their player options and returning to the team.

With these additions, the Jazz projected cap space has dropped from a projected $45 million to somewhere in the ballpark of $10M, depending on what they decide to do with the non-guaranteed contracts they control.

This free-agent class is less than exciting, but as always, there are some pieces that can help a team. Let’s look at a few of those names and how they could fit in Utah.

Cam Reddish | W | Trail Blazers

The former top-10 pick out of Duke could be a buy-low opportunity for the Utah Jazz. The talented wing has bounced around the last few years without finding a true home. Will Hardy showed his ability to maximize each player’s skill set that the Jazz brought in last year. Reddish is another reclamation project that could pay huge dividends for the Jazz.

Jalen McDaniels | F | 76ers

The brother of Timberwolves forward Jaden, Jalen has been linked to the Jazz for a while. He is a rangy wing who defends multiple positions and shoots the ball at a decent clip. After trading for Collins and drafting Taylor Hendricks, the Jazz have a full frontcourt but could use a true wing off the bench.

Ayo Dosunmu | G | Bulls

He is a piece that fits the Jazz motto of positional size and defensive versatility. Dosunmu has a wingspan of over 6-foot-10, which allows him to guard a variety of positions. He is headed for restricted free agency and could be a long shot for the Jazz.

Tre Jones | G | Spurs

This is a guy who seems to break some of the Jazz team-building rules. He doesn’t offer positional size at his listed 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. He also is a career 27.1% three-point shooter. Despite this, he does offer a skillset that the Jazz truly lack: Jones is a pure point guard. While the fit with the Jazz is unlikely, Jones is one of the few point guard options on the market.

Herbert Jones | W | Pelicans

This one is a long shot. Earlier this week, New Orleans declined Jones’ team option, allowing the defensive stopper to hit restricted free agency a year early. All signs point to the Pelicans and Jones working out a long-term extension, but could the Jazz swoop in with an offer that scares the Pelicans away?

Jones is one of the premier perimeter defenders in the league and doubles as a good passer and cutter offensively. The Jazz would probably have to move some salary around and maybe even negotiate a sign and trade with the Pelicans.
