Jordan Clarkson Renders Bold Prediction for Philippines in FIBA Tourney

The Utah Jazz star guard feels good about the Philippines' outlook in the FIBA World Cup.

As international competition ramps up for the FIBA World Cup, the spotlight seeps through the cracks to shine on the home Philippines team, which features Utah Jazz star guard Jordan Clarkson. Clarkson is optimistic going into the tournament.

Upon his arrival in the Philippines, he shared his outlook for the team in the tournament.

“I think we’ve got the chance to do some things," Clarkson said.

Clarkson pairs up with Kai Sotto, the 21-year-old 7-footer. Sotto has yet to find footing in the NBA after going undrafted in 2022, but the Philippines has high hopes for him as it looks to defend its home country.

The Philippines has a rich history and love for basketball. Clarkson is a household name there, but that doesn't mean he's getting "special treatment" from the Philippines coaches. He commented on having the World Cup in the Philippines.

"Seeing the love people have for basketball there, I wouldn't be surprised if every game is sold out," Clarkson said. "It's going to be really loud there, and everybody is going to feel that love and support when you walk around the city, while playing games."

The Philippines squad should have a huge home-court advantage with every one of their games. Clarkson is coming off a career year with the Jazz, and he will look to translate that momentum into the FIBA World Cup as he carries a whole basketball-loving nation on his back.

As international competition grows every year, we will see whether the Philippines team will have enough to get out of group play, a feat that the country has only achieved once (1954).

As teams head for group play, the Philippines will start their tournament in Group A. Here's how it looks for Clarkson and company.

  • Friday, August 25: Philippines vs. Dominican Republic
  • Sunday, August 27: Philippines vs. Angola
  • Monday, August 29: Philippines vs. Italy
