Los Angeles Lakers starting center may be a champion, an eight-time All-Star and a guaranteed first-ballot Hall of Famer, but he is not exactly beloved in LA.

Davis has missed a ton of games. Every time he lands now, he winces and seems to hurt something. There's a reason Charles Barkley's nickname for the guy is "Street Clothes."

The appetite for AD-related merchandise appears to have cooled markedly since even the year of LA's title defense.

Per Twitter personality The Collectibles Guru, a New Orleans Hornets-era Davis rookie trading card from 2012 was initially bought for $181,000 in March 2021. Two years later, its valued dipped by an astounding $169,200, and it sold for a measly $12,000.

Is this a temporary blip? Can AD regain the fans he's lost, due mostly to health rather than on-court play?

Color me dubious.

Davis is still averaging stellar numbers when he has played this season, logging 25.8 points on 55.9% shooting, 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.0 steals a night. His jump shooting has perhaps abandoned him, but his defense and paint scoring remain pretty on-point. His partial availability and his team's relative irrelevance over the past few years has doubtlessly hurt his brand and eroded his appeal beyond the Laker faithful.

It's a strange fate to befall such a talent.
