Ex-Lakers Center Makes FIBA World Cup History with Home Country
A very underrated member of the Los Angeles Lakers during their 2023 run to the Western Conference Finals was none other than Wenyen Gabriel. Even though LA reportedly has their eyes on other big men as the summer winds down for their final roster spot, he provided a level of energy and hustle on both ends that served as a positive for the squad.
Gabriel averaged about five points and four rebounds in 15 minutes per game across the 68 matches he suited up in last season. Due to lack of spacing and tough matchups at times, it was hard to play Gabriel next to Anthony Davis but when the offense was flowing he served a great role.
However, it looks like the former Kentucky big man is having a productive summer nonetheless as he suits up for his hometown country of South Sudan in the 2023 FIBA World Cup and is helping them make history.
First off, South Sudan even being in the tournament is special because it is their first time ever being a part of it and along with Gabriel, other notable names such as Carlik Jones and Marial Shayok are also representing the country.
South Sudan is the youngest country in the FIBA World Cup this year and recently took home their first victory over China to give them an overall record of 1-1 so far.
Gabriel shared his thoughts on what it means to be on such a big stage representing his home country!
"It's an honor to represent the world's youngest country," said Gabriel. "We out here for the first time at the World Cup with all my brothers, we worked really hard to get here. You can tell by the energy in the building, we're all very excited... To all the South Sudanese fans out there, we're gonna represent our country to the highest level."
