Lakers News: Insider Details How Anthony Davis Received Richest Annual NBA Salary

AD got paid.

Today is Friday, August 4, 2023.

Friday was the first day that Los Angeles Lakers big man Anthony Davis was eligible to sign a maximum contract extension, and Davis and LA agreed to a three-year, $186 million extension to start the weekend.

That pact also made some history along the way, as Davis is now the record holder for the richest average annual salary in NBA history at $62 million per year.

The contract ties him to Los Angeles through the end of the 2027-2028 season, when he will be 34 years old.

Davis has been a key addition to the Lakers since he was acquired in the 2019-20 season, as he helped lead Los Angeles to an NBA championship that year and averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds per game last season.

As to whether he would sign the extension, that wasn't a question. Rather it was when he would put pen to paper, and according to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal was agreed upon early Friday afternoon.

“At 3:30 Eastern, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka called Klutch Sports CEO [and Davis' agent] Rich Paul. Made him the offer that he expected to get. … Rich Paul talked with Anthony Davis, they quickly agreed to that max deal, and that was it.”

So just like that, the richest deal in NBA history became a formality of sorts, and the Lakers superstar big man will remain a part of the franchise throughout the rest of his prime.

And Davis will be a good building block to solidify the team's future going forward.
