Beloved former Los Angeles Lakers combo forward Kyle Kuzma, who has been effectively replaced on the team's current roster by impending restricted free agent Rui Hachimura (his former teammate on the Washington Wizards), remains one of LA's favorite expats. He played a critical role on the club from the time the team traded for his draft rights in 2017 through the club's ill-advised 2021 offseason deal for Russell Westbrook, of which Kuzma was a big part.

Westbrook is long gone, and now the Lakers are thriving, with the Western Conference Finals in their sights this week. So this Mother's Day is a perfect time to look back on one of the Lakers' favorite recent sons.

Kuzma's mother, Karri, spoke with Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson about the unique experience of watching her son's Lakers go all the way in 2020. LA beat the Miami Heat in a six-game NBA Finals series, a matchup that could be repeated thanks to the current playoffs' final four.

"Honestly I thought it was a great idea," Kuzma told Robinson. "The pandemic, you're secluded. I felt like it was as safe as it could be."

"It was like a dream," Kuzma said. "When I think back, him saying, you know, 'If you really knew where I came from you'd rock with me.' I'm thinking back like, 'Holy s---, that's my kid. I birthed an NBA champion.' And then to think [about] where he came from, what he went through, my kid busted his ass. He really did it, you know what I'm saying? So that's what was going through my head."
