Laker News: LA Loses Out on Former All-Star Big Man to East Coast Franchise

He could have helped bolster the LA front-court!

As free agency in the NBA opened, the Lakers were linked to many different players. They had a clear need for another big man alongside Anthony Davis and were being mentioned as players for different people. One name was dependent on him declining his player option and hitting the free agent market, Chicago Bulls center Andre Drummond. Laker fans may remember Drummond from his time spent in LA during the 2020-2021 season in the second half.

Drummond had familiarity with the team and could have made some sense as a big man to back up Davis. However, he decided to exercise his option and remain with the Bulls for next season.

In 21 games for the Lakers, Drummond averaged 11.9 points and 10.2 rebounds before the team fell to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs. Drummond provided them with a tough, rebounding center that could bully his way in the paint. However, the stars weren't aligned for the two parties to reconnect.

In 67 games for the Bulls last season, Drummond averaged six points and 6.6 rebounds in just a little over 12 minutes a game.

The Lakers signed former New Orleans Pelicans center Jackson Hayes instead to a two-year deal, and they hope that he can be a lob threat for the team and someone who can guard the painted area on defense.
