Lakers News: LA May Compete With Longtime Rival For Offseason Trae Young Trade

Is this even the right move for the Purple and Gold?

Your Los Angeles Lakers sound like they'll be open to offloading all three of their tradable first round draft picks this summer in search of a major star.

One of those stars, Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young, will have some competition for his services.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reports that the San Antonio Spurs are interested in trading for the veteran guard as well.

Young is an all-offense, no-defense scoring specialist who sure seems to suck up the oxygen in any system, much to the ire of the various Hawks teammates who have cycled into and out of his orbit over the past few seasons.

At just 25, the 6'1" point guard out of the University of Oklahoma is already a three-time All-Star and a one-time All-NBA honoree, and has led his Hawks to one Eastern Conference Finals and three consecutive postseason berths as the club's clear No. 1 scoring option. This year, he's averaging 26.7 points on .427/.371/.858 shooting splits, 10.9 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 steals a night.

The Spurs could be a fascinating option for Young, who'd represent a high-scoring backcourt compliment to Rookie of the Year candidate and presumed superstar-center-in-the-making Victor Wembanyama. They have a lot more to offer Atlanta in the way of draft equity, but the Lakers have plenty to trade in the way of affordable, flippable role player contracts.
