Lakers News: LeBron James Poised To Lap LA Great In Surprising Stat

Why not another?

Los Angeles Lakers great and future Hall of Famer LeBron James took the all-time scoring record from Kareem Abdul-Jabaar last season as he continues to make history with each game.

Set for his 21st NBA season, the superstar's scoring numbers become even more impressive when you consider that's not his natural role on offense.

James has always stressed that he's a playmaker for his teammates first and could set a new mark in the assist category over one of LA's greatest players.

There won't be nearly as much suspense for LeBron passing his next mark on the all-time assist leaderboard. He's just 44 behind Magic Johnson. Even if his assist average drops to 5.0, he'd pass Magic and move into fourth all-time in his first nine appearances.

Johnson is considered one of, if not the greatest passer in NBA history but James is right on his tail when it comes to setting the table for his teammates.

Abdul-Jabaar's record chase received much more fanfare last year and James may prefer the quieter expectations for what he expects to do on the court.

James' season-high average for assists came back in 2020 during his first championship season with the Lakers after an impressive 10.2 mark.

However, this marked the only time that James has averaged double digits in such a category.

Johnson's career got tragically cut short due to his AIDS diagnosis and his career average of 11.2 assists per game trumps James' meager 7.2 mark.

Once again the longevity James holds over most of NBA history means he's right on Magic's tail this late into his career in another record for his illustrious career.
