Lakers News: Why A Big Possible Competitor For Christian Wood Didn't Tender An Offer

LA benefitted from poor timing on their part.

When the Los Angeles Lakers signed center Christian Wood last week, it was met with a ton of positive reviews from across the league. LA was able to get a guy who averaged 16.6 points a game last season for the minimum.

Wood now joins the Lakers as their backup center, but he will be getting a significant role within the team. He has the ability to help them space the floor well, given his 37.9 percent three-point shooting ability.

But before Wood joined LA, he was linked with some other teams, one of those being the Miami Heat. Miami had an interest in bringing Wood in but was dealing with some other factors that precluded them from signing him.

Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel provided the reasoning behind Miami passing on the new Lakers big man.

“Yes, the Heat had been linked to interest in Christian Wood during previous seasons. Yes, the offensive-minded, well-traveled center signed this past week with the Los Angeles Lakers for the minimum. But don’t necessarily cast the mercurial 27-year-old as one that got away. The Heat are not positioned for such complementary moves at the moment, simply because, in light of the uncertainty with Damian Lillard.”

Given where the Heat are, it makes sense to pass on Wood. But the Lakers benefitted from the uncertainty that surrounds Miami right now.

Wood gives the Lakers a solid option in the frontcourt and someone who can score big numbers on any given night. While there may be some question marks in his game, LA getting him for the minimum solves most of that.

He is a low-risk, potentially high-reward piece for the Lakers this coming season, and they are very thankful to have him on the roster.
