OFFICIAL: Mavs Trade for Grant Williams in 3-Way Deal with Celtics, Spurs
After plenty of rumors and speculation in the last few weeks, the Dallas Mavericks finally got the 3-and-D wing they coveted in Boston Celtics' Grant Williams. The move became official on Wednesday.
The Mavs acquired Williams in a three-team deal with the Celtics and San Antonio Spurs. As a result of the sign-and-trade, Williams will be on a four-year, $54 million contract. His contract has no team or player option and is fully guaranteed.
Here are the full trade details: the Mavs receive Williams and a 2025 second-round pick (SAS) and a 2028 second-round pick (SAS). The Spurs receive Reggie Bullock and a 2030 first-round pick swap. The Celtics are receiving a 2024 second-round (SAS), a 2025 second-round pick swap (DAL), and a 2030 second-round pick (DAL).
In 79 games for the Celtics last season, Williams averaged 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from deep. He was one of the Celtics' best defenders on a team that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and the NBA Finals the season before. Given that the Mavs had the 25th-worst defense last year, Williams' arrival is a sight for sore eyes.
“Grant will bring a level of versatility and tenacity to our organization,” General Manager Nico Harrison said. “He has been battle tested in high-level NBA Playoff games and is committed to team success. His willingness to compete in every single facet of the game will complement our group well.”
Since the Mavs did a sign-and-trade, they preserved the full $12.4 million mid-level exception for other free-agency additions. Dallas tried to sign Portland Trail Blazers' Matisse Thybulle to an offer sheet, but the Blazers matched it.
The Mavs' other offseason moves include re-signing Kyrie Irving and Dwight Powell, along with signing Seth Curry and Dante Exum.
