BREAKING: Grizzlies' Ja Morant Ruled Out for Season Before Matchup vs. Mavs
DALLAS — Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant will undergo surgery, ending his season, as announced on Monday night. He was ruled out for Tuesday's matchup against the Dallas Mavericks due to right shoulder soreness.
This decision to undergo surgery occurred after Morant sustained a subluxation in his right shoulder while training on Saturday, resulting in him being ruled out for the Grizzlies' win over the Phoenix Suns.
According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the Grizzlies remain optimistic about Morant's recovery, expecting him to be ready for the 2024-25 season.
"Morant is expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2024-25 season," MacMahon wrote.
Morant being sidelined for the remainder of the season is a significant blow to the Grizzlies, who managed to go 6-3 since his return to the lineup following a 25-game NBA suspension. Memphis already has dealt with not having starting center Steven Adams, who is out for the season due to surgery on his right knee PCL.
Morant is in the first season of a five-year, $197 million contract extension, averaging 25.1 points and 8.1 assists this season. Memphis ranks 13th in the Western Conference with a record of 13-23, positioning the team for NBA Draft lottery outlook more than having a chance to rally for a play-in tournament spot.
The Mavs seek to continue the momentum established amid a 3-0 start to a seven-game homestand when facing off against the Grizzlies without Morant. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are coming off standout performances in a victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in their previous game.
