Mavs Top Buyout Candidates: Terrence Ross Vs. Danny Green?

The NBA buyout market is expected to have no shortage of intriguing options for contenders to pursue. Who should the Dallas Mavericks consider?

SACRAMENTO - The Dallas Mavericks made a splash ahead of the NBA trade deadline by acquiring Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. … and now it’s buyout time.

Terrence Ross Vs. Danny Green?

With an open roster spot, the Mavs could leverage the buyout market to fill one of the remaining holes in their rotation. Among the possibilities could be another ball-handler, given the team's failed stints with Facundo Campazzo and Kemba Walker following the offseason departure of Jalen Brunson.

But GM Nico Harrison is telling us no on that one. …. But yes on something else.

With the Mavs parting with Dorian Finney-Smith, one possible target the Mavs could make is a wing player - let’s say

"I think we have most of the things covered," Harrison said. "Just some wing depth out there that makes sense. Maybe some defense."

Terrence Ross Vs. Danny Green … and more …

Russell Westbrook is no longer in play. He has been linked often to the LA Clippers and is already being recruited by Paul George, his former Oklahoma City Thunder co-star, to join the team. The Miami Heat have been another team many consider as being a real possibility to be Westbrook's next team. Regardless, the Mavs do not appear to have the type of role he can get elsewhere.

Here are some possible buyout targets for the Mavs to give consideration:

John Wall: After an unsuccessful stint with the LA Clippers, Wall was traded to the Houston Rockets and ultimately waived. For a team needing more threats that generate rim pressure, Wall's strengths would help.

The concern would be his ability to fit cleanly when the ball isn't in his hands, given his lack of consistency as a catch-and-shoot option. However, if the goal is to have him mostly run non-Luka lineups, it could be worth entertaining.

DBcom has reported on the "buzz'' surrounding this move.

Terrence Ross: Ross is the only player on this list that has been among the more efficient players in both spot-up and pick-and-roll scoring situations on this list. His skill-set is worth a look considering the lack of reliable options to play out of ball screens on the Mavs' roster aside from the superstars.

Derrick Rose: Similar to John Wall, Rose isn't the best off-ball threat, so if he is going to share the court with the Mavs' superstar talents, it may not be the best fit. The New York Knicks have valued his mentorship, so it remains to be seen if he will truly be on the move

The team is reportedly going to "do right by him."

Will Barton: Since being traded to the Washington Wizards, Barton has been unable to earn a consistent rotation role. He's been highly efficient in spot-up situations this season, but his efficiency has struggled in every other area. Can he step in and be more efficient as a shot creator as he was in the past?

Patrick Beverley: If the Mavs want to add an on-ball defender to take on the tougher backcourt assignments, Beverley would be a respectable option. There are significant limitations to his offensive game that need to be taken into consideration.

Danny Green: After being traded to the Rockets, Green has emerged as a logical buyout candidate. He can guard multiple positions and knock down open shots from beyond the arc. Dallas could use another wing defender. Like Beverley, Green does have a largely one-dimensional offensive repertoire, but is a better shooting threat.

Nerlens Noel: It's hard to say if the Mavs genuinely need another big man. While Noel has slowed down athletically a bit, he's still substantially more agile than JaVale McGee and could be a better fit as a result. There are justifiable concerns with his injury history that should be looked into first.

Reggie Jackson: If the goal for the Mavs is to find a combo guard with an ability to knock down those open catch-and-shoot looks, Jackson could be a solid option. In terms of downside, he's been quite inefficient as a pick-and-roll ball handler and isolation scorer this season in addition to not being a positive defender. Jackson has already been linked as an option for the Phoenix Suns by Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes
