Report: Daruis McGhee to sign Exhibit 10 contract with Indiana Pacers

McGhee played for the Pacers in Summer League action

According to a report from Jonathan Givony of ESPN, the Indiana Pacers have agreed to sign guard Darius McGhee to a contract.

McGhee told Givony that the contract is an Exhibit 10 deal, meaning that McGhee will be around for at least part of Pacers training camp. If he is waived by Indiana prior to the start of the regular season and then reports to the team's G League affiliate, the Mad Ants, for at least 60 days, he will receive a monetary bonus of up to $75 thousand.

The five-foot-nine-inch guard is a rookie who went undrafted after a five-year collegiate career. He spent all of his time in the NCAA ranks with Liberty University, where he averaged 22.8 points and 3.0 assists per game in his final campaign.

He became known for his outside shooting in college, and he shot over 11 threes per game in both of his final two seasons with the Flames. Over that span, he knocked down 39.2% of 775 three-point attempts, an impressive number.

That made him appealing to NBA teams, and the Pacers scooped up McGhee for Summer League play. Even just in practice settings, his range and outside shot were impressive.

"Just trying to be a sponge," McGhee said after a Summer League practice before the team left for Las Vegas.

The 24-year old averaged 6.5 points per game in the summer exhibitions. He shot the ball poorly, but his passing (5.6 assists per 36 minutes) looked better than it did in the NCAA ranks. That's something he noted that he was trying to showcase outside of his three ball.

"I played the two mostly in college. Playing the one, kind of running things," McGhee said when asked what he's trying to prove he can do. He wanted to become more fluid running pick and rolls.

The guard had a pre-draft workout for the blue and gold on May 30. It went well enough that the team wanted to bring him in for Summer League, and now even longer. Training camp begins in early October for the Pacers.

"Great organization. Great people," McGhee said of Indiana. He felt like the energy from the organization was great in his visit.

On a deal with Exhibit 10 language, McGhee could have his contract converted to a two-way contract if he is exceptional in training camp. More than likely, though, he will be a part of the Pacers G League squad and develop there. Given his shooting numbers in college, he is a player worth keeping an eye on. The Pacers roster now has 15 players with guaranteed contracts, three two-way deals, and McGhee's Exhibit 10 contract — which is by default a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum agreement.
